A site is secure if:- The web address is preceded by https.
- A closed padlock or unbroken key icon appears in the browser window.
- Stick to recognised high street names or established online specialists.
- Get a full contact address and telephone number for the retailer.
- Make sure you're familiar with their policy on charges, delivery and returns.
- Buying from a private seller may invalidate your legal rights under the Consumer Credit Act.
- Information such as date of birth and mother's maiden name are often requested by retailers as proof of identity.
- Passport numbers can be requested when purchasing airline tickets.
- Only disclose this information where absolutely necessary. Your credit limit, PIN and Egg password should never be disclosed to retailers.
- Print or save any order confirmations sent to you by retailers.
- If you find any transactions you didn't authorise, contact your card issuer immediately.
