Staying safe. If you think you've found a suspicious transaction or a potential security breach, call 08451 233 233 immediately.
1 Only buy from sites with secure order forms
A site is secure if:
  • The web address is preceded by https.
  • A closed padlock or unbroken key icon appears in the browser window.
2 Use reputable companies
  • Stick to recognised high street names or established online specialists.
  • Get a full contact address and telephone number for the retailer.
  • Make sure you're familiar with their policy on charges, delivery and returns.
  • Buying from a private seller may invalidate your legal rights under the Consumer Credit Act.
3 Never disclose unnecessary information
  • Information such as date of birth and mother's maiden name are often requested by retailers as proof of identity.
  • Passport numbers can be requested when purchasing airline tickets.
  • Only disclose this information where absolutely necessary. Your credit limit, PIN and Egg password should never be disclosed to retailers.
4 Keep records of your online transactions
  • Print or save any order confirmations sent to you by retailers.
  • If you find any transactions you didn't authorise, contact your card issuer immediately.
