Here's just about everything you'll need to know about your chip and PIN card.
|
Using your chip and PIN card
-
When you pay, your card will need to be inserted into the retailer's card reader. You might be asked to do this, or the retailer will do it for you.
-
There will be a key pad (like at a cash machine) for you to enter your PIN. All you have to do is follow the instructions given on the screen.
-
By entering your PIN you're agreeing to pay the amount shown.
-
You'll never see your PIN as you enter it. For security reasons it will always appear as asterisks (*), just like when you use a cash machine.
-
If you make a mistake, simply press 'CLEAR' and try again.
-
In restaurants and other places where you'd leave a tip, you might have the opportunity to enter a new amount or tip before confirming your PIN.
-
In hotels, you'll normally be asked to enter your PIN when you check in, where you'll see an estimated amount for your bill. If the amount is significantly different when you check out, you'll probably be asked to enter your PIN again.

View your PIN online
If you forget your PIN, or need a bit of a reminder, with Egg you can view it online just by logging in to 'your accounts', selecting the 'Security details' tab at the top of the 'Your money' page and choosing the option to 'View your PIN'. You'll need to enter the three digit security code (the last three numbers) on the reverse of your card.

And if you get your PIN wrong
-
Don't worry - you've got three chances to get it right. If you get it wrong three times in a row, your PIN will be locked. This stops anyone who might have stolen your card from having more guesses.
-
If you forget your PIN and it becomes locked, you can view your PIN online at new.egg.com/viewpin. You can then unlock the PIN by correctly entering it at a VISA branded cash machine.

Changing your PIN
If you find your PIN difficult to remember you can change it at most cash machines.
